Alternative • Renewable • Sustainable • Conservation

People have many ways of talking about energy in its various forms.  For those of us in the renewable and sustainable-energy fields, the four most important general terms are Alternative Energy, Renewable Energy, and Sustainable Energy.

Alternative Energy generally refers to forms of energy that are an alternative to traditional, fossil-fuel based sources of energy.  (Fossil fuels include coal, oil [pumped from the ground, i.e., not whale oil], natural gas, propane, methane, and a few others.  Methane is also produced by living organisms, like cows and bacteria.)  Most fossil fuels produce large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) when they are burned.  This is one of the many reasons that renewable energy (see below) is sought by people today as an alternative.  We want to avoid making more CO2, as it is seen as causing global warming.

Renewable Energy is a form of energy that is naturally and immediately replenished.   For all practical purposes, renewable energy has an infinite supply.   Renewable energy includes solar, wind, hydro and geothermal.

Sustainable Energy is energy that if managed correctly can be sustained indefinitely.   Wood is a good example of sustainable energy. If we plant as many trees as we cut down, then we should never run out of wood.

Conservation Energy is often overlooked when talking about energy.  It is the act of reducing the energy of a house hold or business.  This is done by shutting off lights, reducing the thermostat, insulating window, roofs, doors, and walls to tighten the living space envelope and reducing phantom electric power draws.  These are the electrical gadgets that draw electricity even though we think they are off such as computers, tv's toaster ovens, stereos, radios etc  If the energy needs are reduced, you need a smaller solar energy unit.

Nuclear energy doesn't quite fit into any of these categories, as it is established to the point that it is no longer considered "alternative", and it does not produce greenhouse gases; nothing is burned to extract the energy from the nuclear fuel.  However, it cannot be considered "sustainable" or "renewable", as there is a finite nuclear fuel resource which cannot be replenished by the sun.
